APICA Statement on World Environment Day – 5 June 2025
“Go Green, Breathe Clean – Together Against Plastic Pollution”
As the world prepares to mark World Environment Day on 5 June 2025, the Alliance for Peace Integration and Climate Action (APICA) joins the global community in raising awareness and taking action against one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time – plastic pollution.
This year’s theme, focused on “Beat Plastic Pollution”, serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need to shift from a linear, throwaway culture to a circular economy where resources are reused, recycled, and respected. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans, rivers, landscapes, and even in our food chains, causing irreversible harm to ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.
At APICA, we recognize that environmental protection is not only a global concern but also a local responsibility. In our communities across Somaliland, plastic pollution is visibly affecting our natural beauty, agricultural lands, and public health. We believe that empowering communities, especially youth and women, with environmental knowledge and sustainable solutions is key to building a cleaner and greener future.
This World Environment Day, APICA reaffirms its commitment to:
Advocate for plastic waste reduction and improved waste management systems
Promote environmental education and awareness in schools and public spaces
Support community-led clean-up campaigns and tree-planting initiatives
Collaborate with local authorities, CSOs, and international partners for sustainable development and climate resilience.
We call upon every citizen, organization, and policymaker to take meaningful steps towards reducing single-use plastics and embracing environmentally friendly alternatives. Protecting our planet is a shared duty – every action counts.
